Wyomissing junior and High Point commit Kacey Maggs
Parkland traveled to Wyomissing for one of the marquee early season matchups in Pennsylvania. Both teams reached the state semifinals in their respective classifications a season ago. The Trojans went (29-3) and the Spartans finished (31-1). They went down to the wire on Saturday afternoon. Kacey Maggs' three-point play with thirty seconds left propelled Wyomissing to a 46-42 victory. "Finishing that layup felt so good," Maggs told SV Sports' Paul Roberts. Parkland trailed 37-27 entering the fourth quarter. The Trojans got within two points before Maggs converted off an assist from Amaya Stewart. "It's huge. We love beating the big schools," said Maggs. Parkland is the defending District 11-6A champion. The Trojans entered Saturday with a (4-0) mark. They raced out to a 19-9 lead. Delaney Chilcote, a Susquehanna commit, hit two triples and scored ten points in the opening quarter. The 5'9 senior ended up with a team-high 17 points. The Spartans picked up their defensive intensity and outscored Parkland 28-to-8 in the middle quarters. Wyomissing, which utilized a 1-2-2 and 2-2-1 trap, forced 21 turnovers. "We knew that they had a lot of good shooters and communicating was a huge thing for us. We really are working on our communication and it's all coming together," noted Maggs. The 5'6 junior added a dozen points. She banked in a 3-pointer late in the first half to pull the Spartans within 24-21. "She's kind of really taken on the role of defensive stopper. Her offense is really taking it to another level. The shot is looking good," replied head coach Aaron Anders. Maggs is committed to Division I High Point in North Carolina for lacrosse. Stewart gave Wyomissing its first lead at 27-26 on a putback midway through the third quarter. The 6'1 senior jammed nine of her 17 points into that period. Stewart, a two-time All-State selection in Class 4A, has 1,407 career points. "It's not easy when you have the entire team focusing on you. The level of maturity that she has is amazing," emphasized Anders. Stewart, an Albany commit, has led the Spartans to back-to-back BCIAA and District 3-4A championships. Point guard Alexis Hardy, who's headed to the University of Delaware for track, chipped in with nine points. Aneri McGalla provided nine points for the Trojans. Anders had high praise for Parkland head coach Ed Ohlson Sr. "That gentleman is a fantastic coach and he runs a fantastic program. Any time you can get a win against a 6A school, as well coached as they are, we're gonna go home and feel good about ourselves," said Anders. Wyomissing is off to a (4-1) start. The Spartans are expecting to get North Carolina lacrosse commit Audrey Hurleman back from a knee injury in early January. There are a lot of reasons to be optimistic about another lengthy postseason run. "We want to be on top. We don't take anything for granted and we work our butts off every single day," stated Maggs.
