Berks Catholic 6' senior Sydney Corado
Berks Catholic held a one point lead heading into the fourth quarter against Wilson on Tuesday night. That's when Sydney Corado took over. The 6' senior went on a personal 10-0 run to put the Saints in front 37-26 with five minutes left. They never looked back in a 51-41 victory at Lloyd Wolf Gymnasium. "It's a great team win for us and I think it does send a message to the county," Corado told SV Sports' Paul Roberts. Wilson is one of the top programs in District 3. The Bulldogs were (24-5) a season ago, but they're without star point guard Laila Jones due to a knee injury. Corado sank four 3-pointers including a pair in the first three minutes of the final quarter. "Sometimes people think that bigger girls can't shoot so they usually play off of me. If I hit a couple shots, I can just blow right by them to get to the basket. I think it's a huge advantage," she explained. The three-year starter finished with 20 points. "I really liked her composure on both ends. She guarded all over the floor and that's what we need from her," noted head coach Bob Birmingham. He has 652 career victories over 36 years. This is Birmingham's 14th season at Berks Catholic. "I love playing for him. He's just so encouraging to us and he knows what it takes to be great," said Corado. Senior point guard Madison Langdon added 14 points and was 11-of-13 from the foul line. Langdon is 55 points shy of 1,000. "She can dribble through everyone," replied Corado. Gianna Mirenda chipped in with six points and Emma Linderman had four off the bench. The (3-1) Saints ended up 17-of-23 from the charity stripe, while Wilson went 5-of-15. The (1-3) Bulldogs didn't connect once from beyond the arc. Sophomore Kailani Hardy led them with 16 points and Laura Crocona provided nine points. Corado's bucket before the buzzer gave Berks Catholic a 18-16 edge at halftime. The Saints outscored the Bulldogs 24-15 in the fourth quarter. "It's a huge win because they're such a great program. They have great athletes. I don't know if we'll see a team as strong as them, especially at the guards. They are real physical," stated Birmingham.
