Virginia Tech baseball commit Ethan Grim
If Ethan Grim was a teacher, it might be difficult to get a good grade in his class. After firing four shutout innings with nine strikeouts, Grim only gave himself a 7 out of 10. The Virginia Tech commit limited Elizabethtown to two hits in Gov. Mifflin's 3-1 victory on Monday afternoon. This wasn't your typical non-league game in March. More than 25 major league scouts were in Shillington to see Grim and Penn State commit Isaiah Shayter. "They've got some studs over there, Shayter is a stud. We've got some studs over here so it was a pretty hype game," Grim told SV Sports' Paul Roberts. It's very early in the season, and the two right-handed seniors were throwing 92-94 mph. It's rare to see that type of velocity from one high school pitcher, let alone two in the same game. Grim also features a sharp curveball and a slider. The 6'1, 195-pound first team All-State selection got out of jams in the first two innings when the Bears left four runners on base. The (4-0) Mustangs got on the board early. UConn commit Bryce Detwiler led off with a double to right-center. He scored two batters later when Travis Jenkins, who's committed to Canisius, doubled to left-center. Detwiler and Jenkins were also first team All-State picks a season ago when Gov. Mifflin won its first PIAA championship. Billy Angstadt made it 2-0 in the 2nd inning with a RBI groundout to shortstop. Matt Koehler, who started the frame with a double, came in to score. Angstadt's double to left-center in the 4th drove in RJ Weaver for a 3-0 edge. Grim settled in very nicely and struck out the final five batters that he faced. "Your mindset is different when you have a lead, it's easier," noted Grim. He got through four innings with 59 pitches. Grim gave credit to Jenkins behind the plate. "He knows what I want to throw in any count. I've been throwing to him since 8U so he knows everything about me," said Grim. He went 1-for-4 with an infield single out of the cleanup spot. Shayter gave up three runs, two earned, on five hits over four innings. The 6'2, 190-pound righty struck out three, walked three, and hit two batters. "He has a heavy fastball, a lot of ride to it, and a hard slider. He has a really good changeup. He's a tough pitcher," replied Grim. Evan Glucksnis got the save for the Mustangs. The junior was charged with one unearned run over three innings. He finished with four strikeouts while allowing a pair of hits. Justin Borger provided Elizabethtown's lone run with a sacrifice fly in the 5th. The Penn State-Harrisburg commit also tossed two hitless innings of relief. The (1-3) Bears have lost three games by a total of four runs. Meanwhile, Gov. Mifflin has high hopes for another outstanding season. Grim is trying not to think about the possibility of being taken in the MLB Draft. "It's definitely something in my mind, but I'm not really focused on that right now. I'm focused on doing some big things with this team. I'll worry about that later on," he said.
