Lacrosse state champs and All-Americans Gabbi Koury and Alexa Vogelman
The 2022 season didn't end well for the Owen J. Roberts girls lacrosse team. They fell to Garnet Valley 10-9 in triple overtime in the state quarterfinals. "It definitely motivated us. That moment was heartbreaking. We used that moment to push us to be better," midfielder Alexa Vogelman told SV Sports' Paul Roberts. The Wildcats were determined to not experience that feeling again. They turned the page in 2023 and rewrote the history books. Owen J. Roberts beat Penncrest 17-9 in the PIAA-3A final to claim the program's first state championship. The Wildcats finished (27-1) and ranked #13 in the nation. Vogelman said, "Everybody dreams of winning that state championship and to bring it back to our school for the first time, it's definitely a great feeling." The Syracuse commit had a game-high six goals against District 1 runner-up Penncrest. Gabbi Koury, a Florida commit, added four goals and six assists in the state final. Vogelman (117) and Koury (115) combined for an eye-popping 232 goals this year. They're both three-time All-Americans. Koury led Owen J. Roberts with 90 assists. The Wildcats blew out Downingtown East 16-3 in the first round of the PIAA-3A playoffs. They cruised past Great Valley 12-2 in the quarterfinals before a tough 6-4 victory over Conestoga in the semifinals. Owen J. Roberts' roster included eight Division I commits and nine seniors. "We're all really close friends. We've been playing together for probably at least eight years. We have great chemistry on and off the field," noted Koury. The Wildcats also won District 1 and Pioneer Athletic Conference titles this season. They averaged 16 goals per contest. Vogelman gave credit to the coaching staff. "They helped me in so many ways and I'm definitely going to miss them. They taught us a lot of lessons, life lessons too which was great," she said.
