Hamburg wrestler and Lehigh commit Shannon Govern
Shannon Govern is the definition of a student-athlete. The Hamburg senior is ranked second in the state at 130 pounds. She's also ranked second in her class and is committed to Lehigh University to major in Electrical Engineering. Govern is extremely focused in the classroom. "I take a lot of pride in it. That's one of my main goals. I wrestle hard, but I study even harder. It's really important to me," she told SV Sports' Paul Roberts. Govern has had plenty of success on the mat as well. She finished fourth in the state two years ago at 118 pounds. Govern won the Berks County championship this year at 130 pounds and has a record of (20-1). The wrestling community has been very supportive. "Everybody was really welcoming and really nice to me. They really wanted to help me learn," she replied. Govern believes the future is bright for girls wrestling at the high school level. "I think it's gonna be super popular. The amount of participation we've had within just a couple years is insane. There's more wrestlers now than ever in Pennsylvania," she noted. Before heading to Lehigh, Govern is hoping to bring home a state gold medal. "I work really hard. I practice all the time...becoming state champ would mean the world to me," she said.
